GHOST HUNT AT THE MOAT HOUSE
TAMWORTH, STAFFORDSHIRE

THE VENUE FOR EERIE EVENINGS' FIRST EVER EVENT BACK IN 2005!

The Moat House is a fantastic 16th Century Tudor mansion, hidden away in the depths of middle England. Although built in 1572, medieval records show a large building on the site as far back as 1369, meaning there is potentially over 600 years of history to be explored here. It is believed that there are tunnels running from the Moat House to nearby Tamworth Castle, and the beginnings of one of these tunnels is apparently still visible in the now inaccessible cellar. The future King Charles I stayed there in 1619 and it remained a residential home, surviving the English Civil War, until the late 19th Century when it became a hospital for the mentally ill, then known as a lunatic asylum. One psychic medium, upon visiting the Moat House, fled from the building when he saw apparitions of people banging their heads against the wall in a notoriously active corridor.

The decline of cruel Victorian asylums eventually saw the building turned into what it is today, a pub and restaurant with many hidden secrets. Folklore has it that the second floor has a resident ghost by the name of Emily, a young girl who many visitors and staff alike claim to have encountered over the years. In the restaurant, the apparition of an elderly, cowed gentleman has been witnessed, walking on the spot in the raised gallery area. The old tower, now virtually inaccessible due to its condition, is known as one of the paranormal ‘hotspots’. It is believed that at some time in the past this area was engulfed in a ferocious fire, killing numerous maids who still haunt the building. Furthermore, separate psychic mediums have all reported the presence of a middle-aged man who was incarcerated in the tower. His fate is unknown, although it has been suggested that he was murdered in the highest room of the tower, an area that many people have fled in fear and dread.

In the beer garden, a shadowy figure has been seen rushing towards the river and back again. We were contacted back in 2005 by a lady who believes this apparition may be that of her aunt who drowned there in the 1920s. She was employed at the asylum and although the official verdict was suicide, her family have always disputed it, believing foul play may have been involved. Is this why her spirit still roams the grounds of The Moat House? Another regular spook seen by resident staff in the middle of the night is the obligatory 'White Lady', who appears at the foot of their beds, glowing in a strange light before drifting through the walls.

Our previous investigations at The Moat House have thrown up several intriguing incidents, including the sound of a latched door opening being heard and captured on camera on the second floor, despite no such door existing. Disembodied footsteps have also been heard on this floor on several occasions. Most impressively, during one event, an almighty crash shattered the peace of the vigil, emanating from the location of the carvery counter. It sounded to all intents and purposes as if a metal pan had been thrown with force against a wall or floor. There was, however, nothing out of place and absolutely no clue as to what could have caused the noise.

The Moat House was the location for Eerie Evenings' first ever public ghost hunt back in 2005 so it holds a special place in our hearts. Now under new management, it is undergoing various stages of renovation and refurbishment, something which is widely acknowledged to stir up paranormal activity, making it the perfect time for another investigation. So why not accompany us as we return to where it all began for Eerie Evenings!
