HALLOWEEN SPECIAL
GHOST HUNT AT THE BEAR, HODNET, SHROPSHIRE

Once the clock strikes midnight, it will be All Hallows Eve,  a date when tradition dictates that our world is closest to the next and the boundaries between the living and dead are at their thinnest. Join us at The Bear, Hodnet for an evening of genuine ghost-hunting and experience the early hours of Halloween in a real haunted building!

The 16th century coaching inn is renowned in the local area as being an extremely haunted building, yet Eerie Evenings are the only group to have ever investigated it.

The name of the pub is thought to date back to the 1600s when bear fighting was a popular sport - probably taking place on what is now the car park! In the 1970s, an eccentric owner of The Bear reintroduced live bears to the venue, keeping them in a pit below the bar. Curious punters could watch them through the grate in the floor. Unfortunately, bears are partial to a tipple and thanks to well-intentioned liquid contributions from the regulars, these poor creatures eventually died of alcohol poisoning.

This same owner was responsible for introducing the notoriously rowdy medieval banquets, which included live horses running up the stairs and men swinging  from ropes - a health and safety nightmare in this day and age! It was during this time that a homeless man was allowed sleep under the stairs for several years.

Nowadays, things are a little more civilised at The Bear. Under new ownership, it still hosts medieval banquets and is renowned for its good food and cask ales. Although it has been extensively refurbished, it retains its historical character and we are very much looking forward to spending Halloween there!

By all accounts, there are several ghosts who haunt The Bear, some known, some not. The most famous is 'Jasper', who has been written about numerous times over the years. The story goes that during the 16th century, Jasper, a local gentry man was a regular at The Bear. Down on his luck, he had racked up a monumental bar tab. One bitterly cold night, the landlord had had enough and demanded payment from Jasper. Unable to settle his bill, Jasper was mercilessly thrown out to face the elements. It is said that as he lay dying from exposure he cursed the establishment and that the landlord suffered a fatal heart attack that very night. It is a locally held belief that Jasper is still roaming the rooms of The Bear, and  you can now raise a glass in tribute to him in 'Jasper's Lounge'.

Recently, a cleaner was walking up the stairs towards the Medieval Hall when she felt someone push past her. She turned and saw a black shadowy figure which promptly disappeared. Bedrooms 6 and 3 appear to be paranormal hotspots also. In room 6, a guest reported her alarm at waking to see a woman sat on the end of her bed in the middle of the night and several people have reported feeling a 'presence' in room 3. The current owner has been at The Bear for 2 years and personally witnessed a jar of Tabasco Sauce being thrown across the kitchen. There was absolutely no-one near it at the time!

We feel that The Bear at Hodnet is something of a hidden gem in the paranormal world, so join us this Halloween weekend for an evening of otherworldly entertainment and help us investigate the strange goings on at this wonderful venue.
